Library card's a ticket to save in Naperville

It's that time of year again when a Naperville library card can get someone more than a book.

Throughout September, more than 80 local businesses are offering discounts to customers who show their library cards.

It's part of a nationwide program designed to boost library card sign-ups.

"We see a small bump," said Becky Hollis, community services associate for the Naperville library. "Here in Naperville, we're lucky that most residents already have library cards."

The library teams with the businesses to make a greater impact on the few who haven't gotten library cards and to reward those who have.

"I have two businesses that are part of the program," said Jennifer Wise, who owns Fusion Medical Spa and Synergy Institute Weight Loss and Wellness Spa. "This is our second year in the program, and we did get a lot of interest with quite a few people coming in to find out what we're all about."

About the same number of businesses are participating as last year, but it's nearly quadruple the amount of partners the library had in the 2005, the inaugural year.

"We've made it more interactive this year," Hollis said. "From our Web site, visitors can click on the logos of all the sponsors and go to their Web sites."

Beside the promotions on the library's Web site, each sponsor is given signs to promote their participation. That way, customers with library cards who just happen to stumble upon the program can benefit, Hollis said.

Businesses get to choose what types of special offers to provide. Many are the traditional discounts, but some get creative, Hollis said.

"Sunrise Assisted Living Center will send a dozen roses to the person of your choice just for taking a tour of their facility," she said.
