Library Closings: The library will be closed on Sunday and Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

Library Centennial Celebration: The library will celebrate its 100th anniversary with special programs, activities, displays and giveaways through October. Watch for details.

Ongoing Book Sale: Friends of the Library sponsor an ongoing book sale on the first floor of the library during regular library hours.

Show Us Your Library Card: September is Library Card Signup Month. Show your Des Plaines library card to participating merchants during September and receive discounts or other special values. Visit the library or the library Web site at www.dppl.org for a list of merchants and discounts.

Tuesday morning book discussion: Readers' Services Assistant Laura Adler will lead a discussion of "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Books are available one month prior at the Readers' Services Desk. (R-RS)

Millennium Park Unveiled: Jeff Mishur presents a slide show exploring the architecture and public art of Chicago's Millennium Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Millennium Park opened in July 2004. This program takes a look at the history of this epic project and at the central features of the park. This is a Centennial Celebration program. (R)

Foreign Language Film: A free feature length foreign film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 7. Call the Registration Desk (847) 376-2841 for the film title.

Croquet Tournament: Enjoy an afternoon of family fun watching an old-fashioned croquet tournament from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Central Rose Garden on Ashland Avenue across from Central School. Bring your camera. There will be entertainers, cool drinks, prizes and fun photo opportunities with life-size cutout characters from "Alice in Wonderland." This is a Centennial Celebration event cosponsored with the Des Plaines Park District, Graham Hills and the G. L. Hills Funeral Home.

Sunday Afternoon Movie: Friends of the Library will sponsor a feature film at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9.

Thursday Evening Book Discussion: Readers' Services Manager Roberta Johnson will lead a discussion of "Gorky Park" by Martin Cruz Smith at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13. Books are available one month prior at the Readers' Services Desk. (R-RS)

Dramatic Portrayal of Ike and Mamie Eisenhower: William and Sue Wills will perform a dramatic portrayal of Ike and Mamie Eisenhower at 2 p.m. Sept. 16. Share the Eisenhowers' experiences as a military family and their life in the White House. This is a Centennial Celebration program. (R)

Library Board Meeting: The Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 18. The public is invited.

One-on-One Career Counseling: Edie Kleinman, a licensed career counselor from Jewish Vocational Service, will provide 30-minute one-on-one assistance with interviewing, resume writing and other aspects of the job search process from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19. Signup at the Registration Desk is required. A waiting list will be kept. (R)

Meet Congresswoman Schakowsky's Representative: Ann Limjoco from Democrat Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky's office will meet with individuals privately in a third floor study room to answer questions about immigration, visas, Social Security, Medicare, veterans' benefits and other federal services from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 19 in a third floor study room. Friends of the Library Used Book Sale: Friends of the Library will hold a book sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sept. 23. Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Learn the symptoms and treatment of Macular Degeneration at 1 p.m. Sept. 26. Dr. Rahki Patil from the Midwest Center for Sight in Des Plaines will discuss the latest information about this ocular disease. (R)

Documentary Film: A feature length documentary film on the life and death of the electric car will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27. Call the Registration Desk at (847) 376-2787 for the film title. This is a Centennial Celebration program.

Low Vision Fair -- at Niles Senior Center: Speakers, vendors and agency representatives will discuss vision loss from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Niles Senior Center. The event includes displays of the latest products services for persons with low vision. Library representatives will also be on hand with information about the library's assistive technology devices. Co-sponsored with other participating libraries at Niles Senior Center.

Art exhibit: The Des Plaines Art Guild is sponsoring an exhibit of oil paintings by Pat Franson in the third floor magazine reading area throughout the month of September.

Berenstain Bears: Children ages 4-7 and their families are invited to meet a Berenstain Bear from 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 8. There will also be stories, crafts and refreshments. (R-YS) Registration began Aug. 13.)

Drop-In Storytimes: Drop-in storytimes begin Sept. 11. Storytimes for children ages 3-5 will be held from 10-10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and 2-2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Storytimes for 2-year-olds will be held from 10:45-11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Caudill Club Booktalks: Students in grades 4-8 can hear descriptions of the current Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award nominated books and learn how to participate in the voting at 4 p.m. Sept. 12. (R-YS)
