A different look for Glenbard West tennis

Glenbard West girls tennis coach Rob White shook up his lineup just to keep things interesting.

For the second time in less than a week Wednesday, Glenbard West topped Naperville North. This time the score was 6-2 in favor of the host Hilltoppers.

Glenbard West also defeated the Huskies last Saturday on the way to winning the Downers Grove South Invite, so a lot of the girls played different positions in order to give them "a fresh look."

Amanda Schwartz and Ashlyn Selzer, the Hilltoppers' state qualifying doubles team, played first and second singles, respectively, and both won decisively.

"We got a chance to see how everyone responded to different situations," White said. "It wasn't our best day, but everyone played well."

"It was the first time in a long time that I played singles," Schwartz said. "It was hard at first, but after a while I got into a groove with a lot of serve-and-volley."

One of the 2 points the Huskies (2-3) picked up was delivered by the first-doubles team of Katerina Bizios and Ashley Ferkol, who lost to Schwartz and Selzer in the tournament last Saturday..

"We were a little disappointed that we didn't get a chance to play them again," Bizios said. "But we were happy with the win. We both put away a lot of volleys."

Due to a back injury she sustained last year, Ferkol has been forced to serve underhanded.

"My groundstrokes and volleys were OK," Ferkol said. "But it's frustrating to not be able to serve, and I have to play through the pain."

Cleo Stephanides scored the Huskies other point with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory over Emily Spiegel at fourth singles.

Glenbard West's Virginia Dallman produced a 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles, but the Hilltoppers' 3 doubles victories came in close matches that featured either a first-set tiebreak or a second set super tiebreak.

Wesley Jones and Katherine Chin remained undefeated at 5-0 with a win over Savita Joglekar and Shreya Kanabar of Naperville North 6-4, 1-6 (10-5) at second doubles.

Audrey Young and Martha Evangelist topped Emily Mendoza de Leon and Virginia Luchin 6-7, 7-5 (10-7) at third doubles, while the fourth-doubles match went to Kelly Foster and Victoria Noland, who edged Alicia Oken and Gina Castignoli 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.

"We were right in there for a lot of those matches," said Naperville North coach Heather Henricksen. "But we got a slow start in several of them and came on too late. We were close, but we have to learn to finish. Glenbard West is a little more competitive on the court."

"The final score was 6-2, but the meet was a lot closer than that," White said.
