Track tips for Wednesday, Aug. 29

In times of need, the Chicago jockey colony has always taken care of their own, and Saturday at Arlington Park, the local chapter of the Jockey's Guild will conduct a raffle, auction and autograph signing to assist the families of recently injured riders Cecilio Penalba, Uriel Lopez and Israel Ocampo. The fundraiser will take place on the west side of the Arlington paddock from noon to 5 p.m. The Arlington jockeys will make themselves available to sign goggles and take pictures with guests. Raffle prizes include gift certificates to local restaurants and golf courses. Raffle tickets are $10 each, or three for $25. A silent auction featuring racing memorabilia and a private, handicapping session with yours truly will also be offered. Leading rider Rene Douglas has pledged $100 per winning mount for the rest of the Arlington season, and several of the other riders are donating jocks mount fees and percentages of their winnings to benefit their injured comrades.
