Record round for Small

Mike Small began his day shooting for one record and ended it by breaking another.

The University of Illinois golf coach entered Monday's first round of the 85th Illinois PGA Championship at Stonewall Orchard in Grayslake gunning for a record sixth title in the event.

He's sure off to a good start after carding an Illinois PGA Championship tournament record 9-under 63.

"I've had the ability to shoot low in the past, it just hasn't happened in the past couple years," Small said. "I haven't shot one this low in a long time.

"It feels good."

Billy Rosina, head golf professional at Flagg Creek, sits alone in second place after firing a 68.

But this day belonged to Small.

Showing no signs of rust after taking a three-week hiatus following his play in the Illinois Open and the PGA Championship in the same week, Small began his day on the 10th hole and went out at 3-under 33.

He went on to birdie six of the next nine holes to finish his opening round with 10 birdies and a bogey.

"I got mad at that bogey at 17," said Small. "I really got upset with myself hitting a bad shot with the wrong club.

"I was so mad at myself I just focused and went on to birdie (the next four holes)."

Host golf professional Jeff Pajula, and Steve Benson (Hillcrest) are tied for third after each shot a 69.
