Pair charged in Elgin carjacking

Citizens helped police in the arrests of two Chicago men accused of hijacking a car Saturday morning.

Anthony Wilson, 18, of 6915 S. Green St. and Darrell J. Ford, 22, of 916 W. 70th St. were charged with vehicular hijacking, police said.

The 21-year-old owner of a 1991 Acura picked up Wilson and Ford around 8 a.m. at a gas station on Elgin's east side, police said.

He drove them around and told officers later he felt the two were "playing games" with him by getting in and out of the car, one at a time, police said.

At another gas station about an hour later on the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard, the two men argued with him, one placed him in a chokehold and he was pushed from the car, police said.

The two carjackers sped off westbound on Route 20 but were stopped by police at Coombs and Route 20.

Both ran off; one was caught with the help of a citizen as he ran through a cornfield and the other was caught after another citizen reported seeing him walking on her property in the vicinity of Coombs Road and Highland Avenue.

Police from Elgin, South Elgin, the Kane County Sheriff's Department the Kane County Forest Preserve and the Winthrop Harbor Air Units Helicopter assisted in the search.

Police said another citizen took digital photos of the alleged hijackers at the gas station on McLean Boulevard and helped identify the two after they were captured.

Wilson and Ford both remain in the Kane County jail on $25,000 bond. Their next court date is Sept. 7 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
