Grayslake Park District notes

Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Satur­day.

Participants must register in advance for all programs at the administrative building. Registration is required one week prior to each program. If the minimum number of registrations is not received five days prior to each program, the program will be canceled.

Parent/Child Golf Tourney: Each team of parent and child ages 8 to 14 will compete in a handicap tournament against other teams from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at Carillon North Golf Course. There will also be "colored" ball, closest to the pin and longest putt contests and special junior challenge. Fees include golf, prizes and refreshments. The cost is $25 per two-person team. Register by Friday.

Touch A Truck: The Grayslake Park District is putting together an assembly of trucks and tractors including such vehicles as: dump trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, backhoes, garbage trucks, bulldozers and many more, for kids to touch, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the Grayslake Aquatic Center Parking Lot. Register for this event by Sept. 2. The cost is $1 per child. All proceeds from this event will benefit the park district's Grant In Aid Scholarship Program. In conjunction with the Touch-A-Truck Program, the Grayslake Fire Department will hold a car seat safety check. The Grayslake Fire Department has child safety seat technicians trained in proper installment of child's seat. Technicians will inspect children's car seats, help make corrections if needed and give tips on the best way to protect children.

Anyone who owns a large truck or tractor or a piece of machinery that children would love to look at and touch can take part the "Touch a Truck" benefit event. Call Tracy Putkonen, at (847) 223-7529 or e-mail her at tputkonen@glpd.com.

Youth Volleyball League: The Youth Volleyball League will offer girls and boys in third through eighth grade the opportunity to learn and play volleyball. Teams will practice one evening per week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, with matches on Saturdays. Practices will begin the week of Sept. 17; games will be played Sept. 9 through Nov. 17. Games and practices will be held at District 46 schools. All players must attend an evaluation, either Sept. 5 or 6. Evaluations will be from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. for third and fourth grade; 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. for fifth and sixth grade; and 7:45 to 9 p.m. for seventh and eighth grade. Evaluations will be held at Frederick School. The cost is $75 for residents and $93 for nonresidents.

Boys, girls and different grade levels may be combined pending numbers.

Intermediate golf clinic: This clinic for golfers ages 10 through adult who want to improve their swing and golf scores includes a review of basic swing fundamentals, techniques on improving distance and accuracy, short game techniques, sand play and course management. The clinic will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 6 to Oct. 4. The first four lessons will be held at the Master Golf Driving Range and the last lesson at the Carillon North of Grayslake Golf Course. Participants must have some prior golf experience. The cost is $80.

Boys Lacrosse Camp: Beginners and experienced players in fourth through ninth grade can practice the fundamentals of lacrosse, including catching, passing, scooping, dodging and defense. Participants do drills designed to teach and develop these skills as well as team concepts to be used in intra-squad scrimmages. Players are required to have their own lacrosse stick and mouth guard. Sticks are available for purchase from Lacrosse America. Boys must wear protective equipment consisting of a helmet, shoulder and arm pads and gloves. This equipment can be rented from Lacrosse America for a $60 fee. Hockey helmets and pads may be used in place of lacrosse equipment. Camp will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 7 to Oct. 12 at Mill Creek Park. Cost is $95 for residents, and $115 for nonresidents.
