Antioch Twp. man gets 10 years for robbery

An Antioch Township man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for an armed robbery that was thwarted by an Antioch village trustee.

Corey Cloos, 24, of 42273 N. Woodbine Drive, had been paroled from prison about 60 days prior to the Jan. 29 incident in the parking lot of the Jewel-Osco, 966 Route 59.

Cloos walked up to an employee of the store who was crossing the lot on her way to work, showed her a box cutter and demanded money.

A struggle ensued that Village Trustee Robert McCarty saw as he was driving into the lot. McCarty drove his car toward the man and the woman.

Cloos fled to his car and drove away, with McCarty following him as he talked to police on his cell phone.

McCarty directed police to the Thirsty Turtle at 417 N. Circle Drive, where Cloos was taken into custody without incident.

Assistant State's Attorney Marykay Foy recommended the 10-year sentence to Circuit Judge George Bridges, pointing out that Cloos had just gotten out of prison for an aggravated robbery conviction in the weeks before this attack.

But Assistant Public Defender Karen Levi asked for a sentence near the minimum of six years for armed robbery, saying that Cloos suffered mental health and drug addiction problems.

Bridges decided on the lengthier term, telling Cloos he had turned his back on earlier opportunities to seek treatment for his problems.
