Every step you take during workday makes a difference

The little steps you build into your workday can add up -- to a whopping 6 miles, according to the American Council on Exercise, which studied workers in 10 professions as they wore pedometers.

Mail carriers led the pack, taking 18,904 steps a day (that's 7.5 miles!), while secretaries came in last with a little more than 4,000, or 1.7 miles.

Prevention conducted its own research on a stay-at-home mom.

Here's how many steps workers in various jobs take each day.

Mail carrier: 18,904 steps, or 7.5 miles

Full-time mom: 16,791 steps, or 6.7 miles

Custodian: 12,991 steps, or 5.2 miles

Restaurant server: 10,087 steps, or 4 miles

Factory worker: 9,892 steps, or 3.9 miles

Construction worker: 9,646 steps, or 3.8 miles

Nurse: 8,648 steps, or 3.4 miles

Police officer: 5,336 steps, or 2.1 miles

Lawyer: 5,062 steps, or 2 miles

Teacher: 4,726 steps, or 1.9 miles

Secretary: 4,327 steps, or 1.7 miles.
