•Navy Reserve Seaman Recruit Andrew M. Lieber, a 2001 graduate of Libertyville High School, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes.

During the eight-week program, Lieber completed a variety of training, including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations," designed to give recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet and galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Lieber's parents are Patricia R. Marc of Libertyville and Craig L. Lieber, also of Libertyville.

•Air Force 2nd Lt. William L. Devoney III, son of William L. and Mary T. Devoney of Buffalo Grove, and a 2002 graduate of Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Devoney received a bachelor of science degree and commissioned as a second lieutenant.

The academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to provide cadets the knowledge and character essential for air and space leaders, and the motivation to serve as Air Force career officers. The curriculum provides a balanced program of military training, academics, physical training, athletic conditioning, and character and ethical development. The study courses allow cadets to acquire an education in basic and engineering sciences, social sciences, the humanities, including elective courses needed to complete requirements for one of 25 major areas of study.

New lieutenants go on to serve as pilots, navigators, engineers, maintenance officers, professionals in various management and technical fields. Some attend medical or graduate school with special scholarships, while others go directly to non-rated Air Force-wide assignments.

Devoney is an intelligence officer assigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas. He has served in the military for four years.
