Two men in custody after Elgin carjacking

Two Chicago men are in custody after a carjacking today in Elgin led to a manhunt by air and ground.

Elgin police and Kane County sheriff's deputies were called to the area of 333 S. McLean Blvd. for a carjacking around 9 a.m., Elgin police said.

The victim told police that two males forced him out of his white Acura and were last seen driving onto westbound Route 20.

Elgin police and Kane County sheriff's deputies found the Acura a short time later in the area of Randall Road and Route 20. When they tried to stop the car, it sped off westbound onto Route 20, eventually stopping at the William Ryan homes subdivision, police said.

As officers approached, the two men ran from the car. A sheriff's deputy chased one of the suspects through several cornfields and caught him with the help of a citizen and Elgin police.

Police then began searching fields, new construction homes and businesses by land and by helicopter for the second suspect. They got a break after a citizen called Kane County dispatch to report an unknown male walking on their property, police said.

Officers responded to the area of Coombs Road and Highland Avenue where the second suspect surrendered without incident, police said.

The victim and witnesses identified the suspects as the men involved in the carjacking, police said.

The identity of the suspects still are unconfirmed, and charges are pending review by the Kane County state's attorney's office, police said.

Police are asking anyone who saw the incident to call the major investigation division at (847) 289-2600.

Elgin, South Elgin, Kane County sheriff's office, Kane County Forest Preserve and the Winthrop Harbor Air Units helicopter assisted in the search.
