Briefs: Go to a powwow

The Potawatomi Trails Pow-wow Committee of Zion will hold its annual powwow in Zion's Shiloh Park today and Sunday. Gates will open both days at 10 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. today and 5 p.m. Sunday. Traditional music, dancing and crafts will be featured. The public is welcome to the family-friendly event. Admission is $5 a day for adults and $1 for children 6-12. Indian singer to perform

The Hindu Mandir of Lake County near Grayslake is celebrating its first Shri Krishna Janamashtami, or the birth of Lord Krishna, with activities all day Sept. 3. The program, 5 p.m. to midnight, includes devotional prayers and songs performed by renowned Indian singer Anup Jalota, chants, traditional Indian folk dances, and viewing of the baby Lord Krishna moorti. For program details, visit www.hindumandiroflakecounty.org. Tickets for the Anup Jalota show, from 7 to 10 p.m., are priced at $100, $50, and $20, and free for children 10 years and under. Center gets $5,000

A Riverwoods organization serving people with developmental disabilities has received a $5,000 grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation. The Center for Enriched Living got the grant in connection with the volunteer efforts of several employees of Discover Financial Services. The workers had done volunteer work for the center. Sale to benefit LHS poms

Libertyville High School varsity poms will host a jewelry fundraiser from 4 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 7. at 133 W. Lincoln in Libertyville. Jewelry from local artists Kathy Horton Designs and Marlene Regan will be showcased. A percentage of the proceeds will go toward choreography and costumes expenses accrued during the year.

Torah celebration set

Members of Temple Chai in Long Grove will participate in the Torah Mitzvah, a celebration of Torah creation and study. The members will be invited to write a letter in the torah under the guidance of Neil Yerman, a renowned scribe. The celebration starts with a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Sunday that includes singing, dancing and a call to torah. The event will May 9 with the sewing of the last panel on the torah scroll.
