Football preview: Waubonsie Valley at Naperville Central
Nonconference
Game time: 7:30 p.m., today.
Last year: Did not play.
Outlook: In the first meeting between these teams since the 1993 playoffs, Waubonsie Valley enters its third season under coach Paul Murphy with its highest projections since the 1990s. The Warriors return 17 starters and nine of 11 on defense, including linebackers Kevin Garbis and Spencer Merritt and third-year defensive back Josh Daniels. Junior quarterback Tyler Castro leads returning starters at all the skill positions, bolstered by three-fifths of last year's starting line. The Redhawks don't have nearly as much experience, a fact made worse by the suspension of Josh Jelesky. Quarterback Harrison Daniels and running back Michael Caulfield spark the offense while linebacker Matt Jones will be a defensive leader.
Next week: Wheaton Warrenville South at Waubonsie Valley; Naperville Central at Lake Park.
