Briefs: P.E.O. Rummage Sale starts today

The annual P.E.O. Rummage Sale, sponsored by the Barrington and Lake Zurich Chapters of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, will be held today and Saturday at the Langendorf Park gym, 235 Lions Drive, Barrington. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The sale will feature a variety of clothing, from infant to adult sizes, sports equipment, household items, collectibles, small furniture and toys. A special boutique will feature upscale clothing and jewelry.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward higher education for qualified women, including low-interest loans for undergraduate studies, grants for continuing education, and international peace scholarships for graduate students. Call Betsy Rubak at (847) 842-0341.

Library friends to hold special sale

The Friends of the Palatine Library will hold their second annual Special Used Book Sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court. Sale items will include coffee table, collectible, vintage, art, and children's books, as well as special audiovisual materials. Admission is free.

Therapeutic riding slots available

Walk On Equine Assisted Activities, 26665 W. Cuba Road, Barrington, provides therapeutic horseback riding experiences to people with disabilities. Limited openings are available in the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday lessons for the fall/winter session, scheduled for Sept. 4 through Dec. 14.

The program is open to ages 3 through adult. An individual evaluation is conducted prior to joining the program. Volunteer orientations take place every other Saturday at 3 p.m. Reservations are being taken for Sept. 1. For more information, visit walkonfarm.org or call (847) 381-4231.

Free disaster classes in Palatine

The village of Palatine is again offering free emergency preparedness training. The Palatine Emergency Management Agency runs the federal Community Emergency Response Team class on a regular basis.

The course teaches basic disaster preparedness, signs and psychology of terrorism, light search and rescue, fire safety, disaster medical operations, and organization of CERT volunteer teams.
