Tornado warning for Tri-Cities as storm approaches

Residents are being urged to take shelter as severe storms capable of producing 70 mph winds move into western Kane County.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for all of Kane County until 3:15 p.m.

At 2 p.m., a line of severe thunderstorms was moving in from southeastern Ogle and Lee counties at 45 mph, the weather service reported. The weather service reported a storm with rotation and winds in excess of 80 mph in Malta at 2:33 p.m. moving toward Maple Park and Elburn.

The storms are expected to enter Kane County, in the Maple Park area, about 2:50 p.m.; pass through the Tri-Cities and Aurora between 3 and 3:15 p.m., and reach Elgin by 3:20 p.m.

The weather service reported that the storms are capable of producing 70 mph winds and "tornadoes with little advance warning."

Residents should take shelter and stay away from windows.
