River recognition
River Days will roll again this weekend, honoring the Des Plaines River and its rich history.
Starting with a Door County, Wis.-style fish boil on Friday, the eighth-annual Des Plaines event will offer a fun way to learn about the river's history.
"This is a nice way to celebrate the river," said Susan Golland, history center programs manager.
River Days will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Des Plaines History Center, 781-789 Pearson St. Admission is free.
The river's historical lineage from the American Indian tribes to French fur traders to pioneer settlers will be showcased. The Des Plaines River has played a vital role in the development of northeastern Illinois.
During the event Saturday, visitors can visit with a camp of French Voyageur re-enactors, who will display an array of fur pelts and other goods.
Children can try out crafts to learn more about the heritage surrounding the river. Crafts for children include making bead necklaces and "fur" pelts.
Then, they can trade them like Americans Indians traded with French fur traders. There will be games similar to those played those in history. A guide dressed in 18th century attire also will demonstrate proper musket maintenance.
Of course, what would a celebration of the river be without fish?
The annual fish boil on Friday features four serving times: 5 p.m.; 5:45 p.m.; 6:30 p.m.; and 7:15 p.m. Each meal includes white fish, potatoes, onions, coleslaw, dessert, iced tea and lemonade. This year's catch comes directly from Door County, making the event even more authentic.
Prices are $15 for historical society members and $17 for nonmembers. Children under 12 are $8 for members and $9 for nonmembers. For reservations, call (847) 391-5399.
The fish boil has become a tradition. Don's Dock handles the boiling.
"Once they come, I feel like they keep coming back," Golland said.
