Briefs: SuperSibs! founder wins award
Melanie Goldish, the founder of SuperSibs!, for children whose siblings have cancer, has won the Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame Award. Goldish, of Hoffman Estates, wins $10,000 and a $5,000 charitable donation. She was one of 10 award finalists honored for their contributions to their communities, and the winner was determined by online voting. Goldish founded SuperSibs! in Rolling Meadows in 2002 after watching her son cope with his older brother's leukemia. On Sept. 20 Goldish will go to the Energizer headquarters in St. Louis and meet baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., who will give her the award.

Woman's buildings razed
Demolition crews this week began tearing down two structures on Rolling Meadows resident Ruth Molenkamp's property, she said. The city ordered the structures demolished because officials consider them a hazard. But Molenkamp, 86, said she has personal belongings in there. A judge had ordered her to demolish the buildings, but she refused, prompting the city's actions. A few years ago, her home came close to being demolished before she won a reprieve.
Wheeling acquiring sites
The village of Wheeling is in the process of acquiring properties at 115 S. Milwaukee Ave. and 119 S. Milwaukee Ave. with $950,000 in tax increment financing district funds. The plan is to rehabilitate the buildings to house Abbey Carpet & Tile Co., now at 52 S. Milwaukee Ave. In turn, this will allow developer Dean Svigos to redevelop Fresh Farms Market at the southwest corner of Dundee Road and Milwaukee Avenue, expanding the grocery store and building more retail. Director of Economic Development James Lang said the village board approved the purchase of 115 S. Milwaukee this week and is expected to do so the same at 119 S. Milwaukee yet this month.
Quiet zone idea progresses
Buffalo Grove this week approved an agreement on train whistle quiet zones that will affect nine towns along the Canadian National rail line. Village Manager Bill Brimm has taken the lead on establishing the quiet zone along the corridor and hopes the zone can be in effect by Oct. 1. The other eight communities -- Antioch, Lake Villa, Round Lake Beach, Grayslake, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills and Wheeling -- along with Lake County also will be vote on the agreement this month. The zone also requires federal approval.
