Dogs not welcome at major events

Dogs are now no-go's at Glen Ellyn Park District major events.

Park district board members informally directed staff to specify on fliers of major events that residents aren't allowed to bring their dogs -- whether on a leash or not.

Although park district officials previously said a formal ordinance would be voted on this week, the board said Tuesday night no specific action would be taken, and that the direction given to staff earlier this month during a workshop meeting was plenty.

The four-legged animals, regardless of size, will not be allowed at large, public events including the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta, the Freedom Four Run and recreational games at public parks like soccer, football and baseball. Dogs already aren't allowed at soccer games because of children who are afraid when owners take their dogs off the leash and let them run loose.

Officials said they're trying to take early precaution in case an unfortunate incident actually does occur.

"The issue is one of safety, primarily for the participants and spectators of these events, and in an indirect sense, safety of the animal as well," President Bill Taylor said.

Executive Director Cory Atwell said police won't be brought to the scene if a resident doesn't comply by the rules, but a coach or staff member in charge will enforce rules and take action when needed.

Park District Attorney Steve Adams said residents should exercise common sense about bringing their dogs to community events.

About 11 years ago, dogs weren't allowed in Glen Ellyn parks, but the board of that time voted to allow dogs in all of its outdoor park facilities, Taylor said.

Dogs still are allowed at all park district facilities unless noted on signs or fliers of specific events.
