Program offers lessons on travel safety

If you're planning a trip to a foreign country any time soon, you may find the program on "Travel Smart, Travel Safe" sponsored by the Dundee Township Public Library worth attending.

The community is invited to this free program at 7 p.m. Thursday at the West Dundee Public Safety Center II, 100 Carrington Ave., near Route 72 and Sleepy Hollow Road.

Presented by international travelers Al and Gail Popowits, Travel Smart will help you avoid the heartache, inconvenience, and significant financial loss that can happen as a result of crime.

Over the past 25 years, the husband and wife team have made annual trips to Europe as students, European tour guides and members of a large extended Austrian family. During that time they have had a few close encounters with con men. "Unfortunately, the odds are one in four that while traveling abroad, you will become a victim of a street crime," said Al Popowits.

The couple will share with you their secrets for traveling smart and traveling safe. Participants will be able to recognize common situations in which you might become a victim and to employ strategies for avoiding them.

For information, call (847) 428-3661, ext. 308, or go to the library Web site at www.dundeelibrary.info.
