Lingering rain a real pain
The Tri-Cities area has escaped the flooding that's hit the northern Fox Valley, but it's still feeling the effects of the rain.
Campton Hills recorded 2.2 inches of rain in a 24-hour period that ended at 7 a.m. Monday, according to John Kozik, an official National Weather Service precipitation monitor. That's close to the total amount of rain that fell here in all of August 2006.
So far this month, Kozik has recorded a little more than 4 inches of rainfall.
In neighboring St. Charles, steady rains kept Pottawatomie Golf Course closed most of Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The 9-hole course, owned and operated by the St. Charles Park District, is adjacent to the Fox River.
"The golf course is overall just wet where you can't mow some of the areas," said Jim Wheeler, golf course manager. "The river's out of its banks. It's over part of the cart path. We're up to at least our ankles and going higher."
August is usually a busy time for the golf course, which can draw upward of 240 golfers on a Saturday with good weather. But this month has not only been wet but also unbearably hot -- not a good combination for golf, Wheeler pointed out.
