Free Youth Fitness Classes: Condell Medical Center's Centre Clubs offer an opportunity for adolescents ages 8 to 13 to try a free hour-long exercise class. Classes are offered at no charge through Sept. 21. Drop in for one class or a series of classes.

Centre Club fitness instructors will present "Youth Cardio and Strength," designed to improve cardiovascular fitness and increase strength, suitable for all fitness levels. Exercise routines will vary and include step, slide, kickboxing and strength training moves.

The class will be taught at 3:45 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Centre Club in Gurnee, 1405 Hunt Club Road. Erin Muni, a personal trainer for children and adults, will instruct.

The class will be taught at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the Centre Club in Libertyville, 200 W. Golf Road, by group exercise instructor Michelle Knollenberg.

No registration is required. Participants gather in the front lobby to meet the instructor before class.

Condell Distance Classic: The Condell Distance Classic will take place Sept. 16, beginning on the hospital's main campus in Libertyville, 801 S. Milwaukee Ave. Races will include a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile fun run/walk and 10K race.

Race times and fees for preregistered participants are as follows; fees will be higher on race day:

•5K run/walk; 8:10 a.m.; $14.

•1-mile race; 8:15 a.m.; $9.

•10K run; 9 a.m.; $20.

Before the event, registration packets can be picked up at Condell's Centre Club in Libertyville located on Condell's main campus from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14. Packets can also be picked up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 15.

Participants can register at signmeup.com/57028 or in person at Condell's Centre Club in Libertyville at 200 W. Golf Road, or Centre Club in Gurnee at 1405 Hunt Club Road. Athletes of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

The first 1,300 participants will receive a free long-sleeve T-shirt. Food and beverages will be available at the finish line. Awards will also be given for each event, and prizes will be raffled at random. All 1-mile finishers will receive a blue ribbon.

The 5K and 10K races are USA Track and Field certified. Computerized results will be posted.

On race day, Condell Medical Center's physical therapists will demonstrate proper warm-up and cool-down exercises from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Free supervised activities for children ages 5 to 10 years will be available from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

New director: Condell Medical Center has appointed Karen Hanson, a health care industry veteran in quality management, as director of quality and risk management.

Hanson brings to Condell a wealth of experience with quality, staff development, hospital safety and infection control that is in line with Condell's mission to provide an exemplary healing environment. As director of quality and risk management, Hanson will oversee process improvement activities at Condell's main hospital and outlying facilities.

Hanson has a 27-year track record of accomplishments with Milwaukee hospitals, leading them to achieve outstanding scores with organizations that measure clinical quality and regulatory compliance, as well as patient and staff satisfaction. Before joining Condell, Hanson was administrative director of quality management, staff development and safety with Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee.

She holds an MBA from Loyola University in Chicago and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Alverno College in Milwaukee. In addition, she has taken leadership roles in local health care organizations that help professionals develop clinical excellence and establish safe practices in their facilities.
