Theater auditions: Actors from the community are invited to audition for two productions being mounted by the College of Lake County Theatre Department this fall. Auditions for "The Little Prince" and "The Crucible" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 and 28 in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts.

"The Little Prince" is the college's annual children's theater production. Performances will be Oct. 3 through 7, including some school day performances. Auditions will be held in the Mainstage Theatre.

Director Scott Mullins is looking for a boy or girl age 10 to 14 for the main role, a man in his mid-20s to mid-40s and five to 10 ensemble members (men or women, any age, all types) for speaking and non-speaking roles. Auditions will begin at 6:30 p.m. with group improvisation exercises. Actors should wear comfortable clothing and bring a 90-second memorized monologue (or be prepared to read a selection from the play) and an acting resume if they have one. Callbacks will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. Copies of the play are available for review at the Grayslake Campus LRC/Library circulation desk. Rehearsals begin Sept. 4.

Auditions for Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" will take place in the Studio Theatre. Performances will be given Nov. 9 to 11 and 15 to 17. Director Thomas B. Mitchell is looking to cast girls from age 14 to women 60-plus and men from age 17 to 60-plus. Actors should bring a one- to two-minute dramatic monologue and be prepared to stay the whole evening. Callbacks for major roles are scheduled for Aug. 29. Rehearsals begin Oct. 1 and will be held Monday through Thursdays from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Art gallery exhibit schedule: Several new art exhibits are planned for 2007-08 at the College of Lake County Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art. All events are free and open to the public. The gallery will present the following exhibits in the coming year, and opening receptions are planned for each exhibit:

•Through Sept. 23: "When I Grow Up I Want To Be …" This is an exhibition of paintings and drawings by children living in orphanages in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The exhibit also includes documentary photographs of the children. The show is sponsored by When I Grow Up I Want To Be, Inc., an organization that works to foster a cultural bridge between Americans and orphans by helping children develop their artistic talents and express their humanity. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Sept. 28 to Nov. 4: "Recent Works: A Juried Competition." The 27th annual competition includes all fine art media and is open to all artists who reside or work in Lake County. Approximately $2,000 will be presented in cash prizes and purchase awards for the college's art collection. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 28.

Nov. 9 to Dec. 14: "Karena Karras and Bert Menco: Daydreams and Night Dreams." Chicago artist Karena Karras creates highly imaginative and exquisitely crafted surrealist oil paintings. Bert Menco, Evanston, will display drawings and intaglio prints. Like Karras, Menco's images also draw upon an inner vision and convey a sense of poetic narrative. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 9.

Jan. 18 to Feb. 24, 2008: Members Exhibition. A diverse group show of all fine art media by 100 Lake County artists. Funds from artist memberships support the endowment of the Robert T. Wright Gallery. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 18.

Feb. 29 to April 6: Carrie Iverson -- Survey. Carrie Iverson is a printmaker, painter and glass artist based in Chicago. She will exhibit works in these media and display a site-specific installation. A reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Feb. 29, with a gallery talk by the artist from 6:15-7 p.m.

April 11 to May 17: The College of Lake County Student Art Competition. A juried exhibit by current art students at CLC featuring painting, drawing, computer graphics, photography, ceramics, jewelry and sculpture. The CLC Student Activities Office sponsors cash merit awards and the Lake County Art League sponsors two $500 scholarships for art students. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. April 11.

May 23 to July 3: "Kathy Weaver and Mary Seyfarth: Whimsical Musings." Kathy Weaver presents fiberworks and paintings that are at an intersection between technology and art. Mary Seyfarth displays ceramics and small sculptures and is the chairwoman of the ceramics department at Columbia College. Both artists reside in Lake County. A reception will be from 7 to 9 p.m. May 23.

The Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the Grayslake Campus is a project of the College of Lake County Foundation and is located at 19351 W. Theater rentals: Space reservations are now being taken for community groups, arts organizations and corporations interested in renting the theater facilities in the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.

The JLC includes a 600-seat proscenium Mainstage Theatre, the 250-seat thrust stage Studio Theatre and the 125-flexible-seat Frank J. Harnish Experimental Theatre. The theater spaces feature professional quality lighting and sound and are ADA compliant with wheelchair access, assistive hearing devices, Braille signage and other amenities.
