Boy OK after near drowning
A 4-year-old boy is reported to be at home recovering after nearly drowning Friday at the Seafari Springs Aquatic Center in Hanover Park, authorities said.
A lifeguard noticed the child was in distress at the five-foot mark of the main pool and pulled him out, said Laura Clark, Hanover Park Park District's aquatics and recreation supervisor.
The boy was foaming at the mouth, Clark said, and pool staff cleared his airway and performed artificial breathing. CPR wasn't necessary.
By the time the Hanover Park Fire Department got on the scene, the boy was "breathing with a heartbeat," said Fire Lt. Richard Hish. Police also responded.
He was transported to an undisclosed hospital, where the park district reported he was alert and conscious.
"All their equipment was set up and everything was professionally done," Hish said. "I think this showed they're well-trained and react well under pressure."
At the time of the incident, Seafari Springs had about 200 patrons and nine lifeguards on duty, the park district said.
According to Clark, there's never been such a close call at the water park, which is back to operating normally.
The park district is investigating the accident in cooperation with the police.
