Homeless man makes shocking offer

A homeless man hiding a meat cleaver in his coat has been accused of offering money to two young girls for a date, Carpentersville police said Thursday.

Juan J. Villanueva, 55, was charged Thursday with two counts of indecent solicitation of a child, according to court records.

The girls, 14 and 12, were walking at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Meadowdale Shopping Center when Villanueva approached them, police said.

Their mother was about 15 feet behind them, police said.

Villanueva asked the girls for dates and offered money, police said. Their mother saw and heard the offer, and confronted Villanueva, police said.

Villanueva in turn offered her to pay her $250 if he could have sex with the two girls -- and then flashed an envelope filled with bills, police said.

Villanueva was carrying a meat cleaver concealed in his jacket and a metal chain in one of his pockets, police said. He did not indicate to the victims he had a weapon, police said.

He also had an envelope containing $532.

During his interview, police said Villanueva described himself as a "playboy" and said he thought the girls were 14 or 15 or 17 years old.

Court records show that 15 warrants have been issued for Villanueva's arrest in the past five years.

He said in court Thursday he had lived in Galesburg, Elgin and Carpentersville for the past 15 years.

His bond on the two Carpentersville charges and an outstanding warrant from Elgin was set at $15,300.

He was taken to the Kane County jail and his next court date is on Aug. 31 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
