Stone promoted to head Daily Herald advertising staff

Twenty-four year newspaper veteran Scott Stone will assume the duties of the Daily Herald's vice president of advertising.

It was announced Thursday that Stone, who serves as vice president for business development, interactive media and matrix operations, will oversee all advertising sales units of the company following the resignation of Vice President of Advertising John Kelly.

A 10-year veteran of the Daily Herald, Stone, 46, spent 20 years working as a reporter and news bureau manager before switching to the business side in 2003.

Paddock Publications Chief Executive Officer and President Douglas K. Ray said Stone boasts a strong industry background.

"This is a natural addition to his responsibilities," Ray said. "Scott and his team are well equipped to meet the needs of the advertising community. I know he will do well."

Stone said his experience should prepare him to meet the challenges of the changing media environment.

"It only makes sense to organize so that our entire sales operation is under one umbrella to better manage this structural shift," he said. "To not only survive but to thrive and grow, we need our entire operation working together."

Stone replaces Kelly, who resigned to accept a position as vice president of advertising with the Palm Beach Post in Florida, effective Sept. 7.

"John has been an important part of our success during his almost four years with the company, helping the advertising staff grow revenue, develop new products and new initiatives in the midst of changing dynamics and a changing economy," Ray said.

During Kelly's tenure, the Herald increased its market share compared to the Chicago Sun-Times and Tribune. In addition, the Herald has started profitable strategic partnerships with ADVO, Yahoo, AutoFocus and Crain's.
