Price of lunch in Batavia schools just went up
Batavia students will have healthier choices for school lunches this year, but it will come at a higher price.
The Batavia School Board approved a 20-cent increase in the price of lunches and a 10-cent increase in the price of milk on Tuesday night.
An increase in transportation costs and adding more fresh produce options were the reasons behind the increase, said Leah Swanquist, Batavia's assistant director for building and grounds.
"A better food quality is going to be incorporated into the menu," she said.
The student lunch price will increase from $1.85 to $2.05, while adult prices will rise from $2.25 to $2.45. A carton of milk will rise in price from 35 cents to 45 cents.
Students in the elementary and middle schools will get two choices from a "sides bar" that includes fruits and vegetables, she said.
Also, food provider Sodexho is planning to use whole grains in more food products, she said.
"I think we're looking at a change here that's going to be very welcomed in the district," said School Board President Ron Link.
The financial goal for the lunch program for the district this year is to break even, Swanquist said. The program has lost money with previous healthy food initiatives.
The lunch prices remain competitive with other districts, she said. Student lunch prices in Geneva, St. Charles and Kaneland districts range from $2 to $2.50.
