Police creating checkpoints to watch for drunken drivers
Police across the state will set up a dragnet of roadside checkpoints to nab drunken drivers over the next two weeks, authorities said Tuesday.
The $1.7 million operation, which includes an advertising campaign, will incorporate 350 local police departments, the state police and county officers. Statewide, 425 roadside checkpoints are planned.
"If you are driving impaired, you will be arrested," said Illinois State Police Director Larry Trent in a statement.
The joint measures will also include concentrated night and weekend patrols. The campaign starts Friday and ends on Labor Day, Sept. 3.
State police officials have announced the location and times of a few of the planned roadside checkpoints.
On the Reagan Memorial Tollway, I-88, at Route 31, police will pull over drivers for routine checks between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. on Aug. 19 and Aug 26.
Police will also conduct checks on the southbound Golf Road exit off the Tri-State Tollway, I-294, between 6 p.m. and 11 a.m. on Aug. 25.
