Know your Arlington Million facts

Here's how to look like a winner at the Arlington Million before you place a single bet.

1. Does the Million sell out ahead of time

Almost never. On Saturday, you can walk to up to the gate and buy a $10 general admission ticket with no problem. Parking is free.

2. Bring cash.

The ATMs at Arlington dispense only $50 bills; each transaction costs $2.50.

3. No umbrellas or flash photography.

They scare the horses.

4. Can I bring food into the track

Only sandwiches or things you prepare at home. No fast food, no glass and no alcohol. Only one cooler per adult.

5. I don't know how to bet.

The track offers a free "How to Wager" guide at the information booth. There are also "wagering hosts" -- in gold coats -- who stroll around the apron level. If you really want to look like a pro, carry a copy of the "Daily Racing Form" under one arm. Flip though it from time to time.

6. What is the smallest/most amount of money I can bet on a race

You can place a 10-cent Superfecta bet, where you pick the first four horses to cross the finish line in the correct order. The minimum bet on one horse to win is $2. There is no upper limit on how much you can bet, hence the saying, "Let it ride."

7. Is there a dress code

It's usually casual dress, although shoes and shirts are required. You'll see some ladies in formal gowns and men in suits and ties. So if you want to fit in everywhere, stick with "business casual," which is the dress code in the Million Room, Suite level and Governor's Room.

8. What if it rains

The horses get wet. You, however, can probably stay dry. But if there is lightning, the track may postpone a race for a few minutes.

9. I don't want to sit in traffic after the Million.

Then let everybody else file out while you grab a final drink or bite to eat at the Players Lounge on the second floor, which is open for about 45 minutes after the final race. Racing fans who just can't get enough can head over to Trackside Restaurant.
