Libertyville tops Lena with 17-hit attack

Libertyville's American Legion team continues to hit the baseball with authority.

The Bandits pounded out 17 hits Friday night in defeating Lena 14-8 in the Second Division tournament at Freeport.

Libertyville, which improved to 17-5-1 and 3-1 in the tournament, plays St. Charles (2-0 in the tournament) at noon today. If the Bandits lose, the season is over. If they win, they play St. Charles again at 4 p.m. for the right to advance to the state tournament in Mattoon.

Against Lena, Willie Caldwell was 3-for-4 with a double for Libertyville, which has scored 64 runs in its four tournament games. Tom Jacobson added 2 hits, Chase Guarnaccio had a 2-run triple, and Tim Matheson contributed an RBI double.

"We're getting our leadoff guys on base," Libertyville coach Jim Schurr said.

Nick Wilcox pitched 8 innings for the win.
