WASHINGTON -- Everyone knows the Coast Guard has saved countless lives in U.S. waters. Now they've gone back and counted: more than 1 million rescues from the days of wooden sailing vessels to the current era of swooping high-tech helicopters. The Coast Guard is touting its exploits to mark its 217th birthday today.
-- Submersible too close:
NEW YORK -- New York police discovered a submersible floating in the East River near a docked cruise ship on Friday and detained three men in what they said was not a terrorist-related incident. The partially submerged spherical sub and a small inflatable boat were spotted approaching a security zone around the Queen Mary 2, which is docked at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Teen gets life in prison:
BARABOO, Wis. -- A 16-year-old was sentenced Friday to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the shooting death of his high school principal. Eric Hainstock was convicted a day earlier of the first-degree intentional homicide of Weston Schools Principal John Klang last September.
Shuttle flight delayed:
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA delayed the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour by one day to allow time for workers to finish replacing a leaky valve in the spaceship's crew cabin, space agency officials said Friday. Liftoff of the second mission of the year had been targeted for Tuesday but was rescheduled for Wednesday.
Marine gets 15 years:
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- A jury sentenced a Marine sergeant Friday to 15 years in prison for the murder of an Iraqi civilian during a fruitless search for an insurgent. Sgt. Lawrence G. Hutchins III also was dishonorably discharged, reduced in rank to private and verbally reprimanded.

LOS ANGELES -- A Spanish-language TV journalist, who broadcast news of the marriage break-up of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa while having an affair with him, will keep her job amid accusations of ethical lapses. In the latest twist of the scandal engulfing one of the most promising Latinos in U.S. politics, Mirthala Salinas, 35, was suspended without pay for two months at KVEA-TV Channel 52, the Telemundo network said.

WASHINGTON -- Consumers should not eat certain brands of French-cut green beans because of concerns they could be tainted with the toxin that causes botulism, U.S. health officials warned Friday. The green beans were manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc. of Manitowoc, Wis., and packaged in 14.5-ounce cans, the Food and Drug Administration said.
