St. Charles Legion Post 342 reigns again in 11th District
The St Charles American Legion Post 342 baseball team captured it's fourth consecutive 11th District championship Sunday at Plainfield.
Post 342 went 3-0 in the double elimination format with a 13-3 win over Joliet Post 1080, a 7-3 triumph over Crystal Lake Post 171 and a 3-2 victory over Elmhurst to win the crown.
Mike Hoscheit's 2 home runs and 7 RBI led the hitters, along with outstanding pitching by Chris Hamel, Andy Grunewald, Chris Burgess, Brett McQuade, Adam Shiltz, Brian DelaTorriente and Zach Deutscher.
The team is coached by Dale Wilderspin and Greg Kowalski.
Team members are: Mike Sentman, Alex Beckman and Deutscher from Batavia; Hayes Cooper from Marmion; Jared Jones, Hoscheit, Burgess, Tony DeMartino, Vinny Frede, Grunewald and McQuade from St. Charles East; and Jordan Ask, Hamel, Mike Corrigan, Jim Vojahosky, DelaTorriente and Shiltz from St. Charles North.
St. Charles advanced to the 2nd Division tournament in Freeport this week and will face teams from Freeport, Libertyville, Morris and Lena.
The winner advances to the state tournament in Mattoon.
Softball
Wasco Diamonds tryouts: The Wasco Diamonds Girls Fastpitch softball program will conduct tryouts for ages 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U for the 2008 season on Aug. 8, 11, and 12. Tryouts will be held at Campton Township Community Park located on Brown Road, just north of Route 64 in Wasco.
The Diamonds are entering their 14th season of travel fastpitch softball.
On Aug. 8, 16U and 18U teams have tryouts from 5:30-8:30 p.m. On Aug. 11, the 10U and 12U players try out from 8:30-11:30 a.m. There will also be a tryout for 14U, 16U, and 18U from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
On Aug. 12, the 14U, 16U, and 18U players try out from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The 10U and 12U players try out from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
Batavia Blue Devils tryouts: The Batavia Blue Devils Girls fastpitch softball organization will hold tryouts for the 2008 season on Sundays, Aug. 12 and 19.
The tryouts for U10 and U12 will begin at 1 p.m., and the U14 and U-16 will begin at 3 p.m. Both tryouts are at Batavia High School.
The players' softball age is their age as of Dec. 31, 2007. Please arrive 20 minutes early to register. Players are required to attend one tryout but may come to both.

St. Charles Comets tryouts: The St. Charles Comets traveling fastpitch softball organization will host tryouts for the 2008 season on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the East Side Sports Complex on Kirk Road in St. Charles.
U10 girls with birth dates on or after Jan. 1, 1997, can try out between 9-10:30 a.m. U12 girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1995, will try out between 1-2:30 p.m. U14 girls born on or after Jan. 1, 1993, may try out between 3-4:30 p.m. U16 girls with birth dates on or after Jan. 1, 1991, may try out between 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. U-18 girls with birth dates on or after Jan. 1, 1989, have tryouts from 4:30-6 p.m.
Players should arrive 30 minutes early to register and warm up. Please bring a copy of an official birth certificate and a mitt. Registration and waiver forms are available at stcharlescomets.info and will also be available on site.
The second chance and/or rainout tryout date is Sunday, Aug. 19, at the East Side Sports Complex. 10U and 12U age groups are at 9 a.m., and the 14U and 16U age groups try out at 11 a.m. The 18U tryouts are at 11:30 a.m.
