Volunteering helps in so many ways

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has been assisting non-profit agencies throughout McHenry and Kane counties since 1987, when Senior Services Associates agreed to sponsor the program.

The program has, however, been around for a lot longer. RSVP was launched in the spring of 1971.

That summer, 11 programs were federally funded nationally to engaging those individuals 60 years of age or more in volunteer service.

Today, more than 448,000 RSVP volunteers 55 and older are engaged in service throughout the United States.

RSVP began a new program year on July 1. Last fiscal year, more than 85,000 hours of service were given by 670 active volunteers in McHenry and Kane counties.

Of these volunteers, 31 percent are male and the average age of our current roster is an energetic 72.

Ninety-nine agencies and programs throughout the two counties benefit from the knowledge and experience of a lifetime of these giving individuals.

Critical needs were met because of the service given in the areas of: community and economic development (i.e. transportation services and tax counseling), education (i.e., computer literacy, tutoring and Head Start), health and nutrition (i.e., congregate and home-delivered meals, food pantries) human needs (i.e., crisis intervention and companionship), and public safety (i.e., crime awareness/avoidance and legal assistance).

Are you considering volunteering you time? Keep this in mind. Volunteers help themselves to better health while helping others, according to a study released recently by the Corporation for National and Community Service that reviews a compelling collection of recent scientific research.

"The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research" has found a significant connection between volunteering and good health. The report shows that volunteers have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease.
