Aurora native stars in MTV's "I'm Celibate"
Growing up in Aurora and attending Indian Prairie Unit District 204 schools, Kristin Summers says girls were under frequent pressure to have sex.
Today, the 20-year-old is scheduled to appear on an episode of MTV's "True Life" series in an episode called "I'm Celibate."
Summers hopes her 20-minute clip in the hour-long episode will inspire younger girls, including her own 15-year-old sister.
"I know that going through middle school and high school there's a lot of pressure to have sex, and for girls to kind of be promiscuous and a sex symbol," the 2005 Neuqua Valley High School grad said.
But it's also possible to resist those pressures, she said.
"You can do what you want, you can make your own decisions, and it's OK," she said.
Her clip was filmed at her parents' home in White Eagle Club and at Pasta Amore Inc., both along Route 59. A good portion also was shot in Nashville, Tenn., where Summers now lives, works as a bartender and attends Belmont University.
The episode, which was filmed from April through June and highlights three individuals struggling to remain celibate, is scheduled to air at 1 and 2 p.m. today. The show premiered on July 25. (For exact times, visit www.mtv.com.)
At the beginning of the whole reality TV process, Summers had cold feet.
"After the first day it got easier, and it was just more fun than anything," she said.
Now she's definitely enjoying the pseudo fame of being on national TV.
"It's just fun walking around and getting recognized," she said. "It's fun getting reactions, too, of what people think of the show."
Summers' parents support her wholly.
"I think it's great," said her mom, Carmie Summers. "I supported her in wanting to do this, and I think that it took a lot of courage for her to go on national TV and talk about something very private."
