Vested interest in war ending badly

On July 25, Jim Orme wrote a letter to the Fence Post, "Media's negative coverage of the war." It was a well-written letter. However, it doesn't tell the whole story.

Most Democrats, and many Republicans, have invested their entire political campaigns and possibly their political careers on the U.S. losing the Iraq War. They have vested interests in seeing that the voter's attitude is kept negatively focused on the Iraq War. Any positive news must be turned into a negative and be placed on page 7 in most newspapers.

Negative statements by our U.S. senators are located on page one or two, and they always seem to get their comments on TV. Anything positive, even a charitable act by our soldiers, brings out the Begala/Carville negative tag team. If it wasn't for the pressure from our veteran groups we would see even less positive Iraq news. It is obvious that we are not seeing the whole picture.

Imagine today's Democratic presidential hopefuls at a so-called debate and the prevailing opinion is that the war is turning positive. What would there be left to trash this administration? That is why there is no doubt that the Democrats have a political "live or die" vested commitment to see this war ending in disgrace. Their political lives depend on that outcome. Anything else and their party is in deep trouble.

That is not to say that the war does not have serious problems. What I say is that politicians, and Democrats in particular, have put their party and careers ahead of our country and our soldiers' safety to such an extent that they must do all they can in open or surreptitious ways to make sure the war has some sort of negative outcome.

The proof is right there in many papers and on the evening news. Listen carefully to what is being said.

Note to Mr. Orme. Sen. Harry Reid gets it -- don't ever think he "doesn't get it."
