Neither driver in fatal crash was drinking, police said

Neither of the teenaged drivers involved in a fatal accident in Deerfield last week had been drinking before the crash, police said Monday.

Blood tests and other examinations showed no alcohol in either driver's system, Deerfield police said. The results of additional toxicology tests are due Thursday, police said.

One teen was killed and six others injured in the July 24 crash. Gina Bronge, 15, of Deerfield, suffered fatal head wounds.

The crash happened when a Hyundai Tiburon turning from Waukegan Road onto Kates Road struck the Jeep Wrangler in which Gina was riding, police said. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Gina, an incoming sophomore at Deerfield High School, was the daughter of Mundelein police Sgt. Joe Bronge.

No tickets have been issued as authorities continue investigating the crash.

Police have said they don't believe speed was a factor in the accident. Additionally, the traffic lights at the intersection were working at the time, police said.
