Singh joins Canadian Open chase

Vijay Singh patiently worked his way up the leaderboard, leaving playing partner Mike Weir behind again in the Canadian Open.

The 2004 winner in a playoff with Weir, Singh shot a 6-under 65 on Friday in Markham, Ontario, to finish the second round a stroke behind leaders Steve Allan and John Mallinger.

"The golf course isn't very difficult, but the pin placements are," said Singh, making his 10th appearance in the event. "The pin placements are very much on little slopes and you've got to be on the correct side of the pin. A lot of times you're 6, 8 feet away, but you have to read it so well and make a perfect putt to make it."

Weir nearly missed the cut for the second straight year and 11th time in 16 starts in the national championship. The Canadian followed his opening 71 with a 70 to qualify for weekend play by a stroke at 1 under.

"It was a struggle all the way around," the 2003 Masters champion said. "I'll go to the range and try to figure it out. I've got to play really well to get back into this thing. You never know when your game can come around."

Allan added a 68 to his opening 64 to match Mallinger (66) at 10-under 132 on Angus Glen's North Course. Tripp Isenhour (68) joined Singh at 9 under.

"I've been playing well but just haven't cracked the big finish," said Allan, a 33-year-old Australian who won the 1998 German Open and 2002 Australian Open.

Senior British Open: Tom Watson missed a 5-foot putt at the last hole and tossed away a share of the lead at the Senior British Open in Gullane, Scotland, while overnight leader Nick Faldo lost his putting touch and slipped to sixth.

Watson finished with a par 71 and handed the lead to Des Smyth, who shot 70 and held the clubhouse lead with a 2-under 140 total for more than six hours at windswept Muirfield. No player broke 70 on Friday.

"I left my putt short, about 5 feet and then I missed it," said Watson, who has won this event twice. "Not a good way to end."

A five-time British Open winner -- including on the same Muirfield links in 1980 -- Watson was tied for second with Eduardo Romero (71), Gordon J. Brand (73) and Stewart Ginn (70) at 1 under. Faldo shot a 74, 2 strokes behind the leader after opening with a 68 on Thursday in his senior tour debut.

Evian Masters: Diana D'Alessio of the United States and Jin-joo Hong of South Korea share a 3-stroke lead after the second round of the LPGA Tour's Evian Masters in Evian-Les-Bains, France.

Michelle Wie, the 17-year-old from Hawaii, rebounded with a 1-under 71 for a 144 total and made the cut. She had gone 24 consecutive rounds without breaking par.

"I'm very happy," Wie said. "That's my first round under par this year. It's a bit of a breakthrough."

D'Alessio shot a 68, while Hong had 4 birdies and 2 bogeys in her round of 70 as both totaled 7-under 137.

They were followed by Annika Sorenstam of Sweden (69), Jang Jeong of South Korea (71) and Brittany Lincicome of the United States (74).
