Sixth rabid bat found:
A sixth rabid bat has been discovered in Lake County, health authorities said Friday. The bat was found Sunday in a Waukegan front yard. Last year, three bats tested positive. The department is investigating the reason for the increase but officials said it could be that more suspicious bats are being reported. This year, rabid bats have been found in Lake Villa, Antioch, Ingleside, Zion and Waukegan. The bite of a rabid animal is the most common cause of rabies in people, although it can be contracted if infectious material, such as saliva, comes in contact with one's nose, mouth, eyes, or an open wound.
Finale for Chord on Blues:
A struggling St. Charles blues venue plans to close for good tonight, with Grammy nominee Tab Benoit singing its swan song. Benoit is scheduled to take the stage at 9 p.m. for a "Last Waltz" concert at Chord on Blues, 106 S. First Ave. "There's no better way to close the books," club manager Steve Chapman said Friday. "Tab's probably put more people in here in the last five years than anybody." After 10 years of drawing internationally acclaimed musicians, Chord on Blues began a slow collapse amid financial difficulties last year. Admission tonight is $15. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Madigan withdraws:
Attorney General Lisa Madigan withdrew on Friday as lawyer for Gov. Rod Blagojevich in a fight over whether the governor must release federal subpoenas to the public. Madigan doesn't want to delay the case by continuing a dispute over whether she will represent Blagojevich or whether he can choose his own lawyer, a spokeswoman said. "We want the actions to be resolved expeditiously and the second issue of who's going to represent the governor, if it's set aside, the courts can decide the more important matter," spokeswoman Robyn Ziegler said.
Teens accused in burglary:
Two Bartlett 17-year-olds and another youth are facing burglary charges after police said they were found trying to steal items "large quantifies" of alcohol and cigars from a local golf course. Bartlett Sgt. Michael McGuigan said officers on bicycles and a Segway were patrolling the Bartlett Hills Golf Course, 800 W. Oneida, about 10 p.m. Thursday when they came across three youths burglarizing the concession stands. The three, McGuigan said, had taken a case of beer, several bottles of alcohol and several cigars, with an estimated of value of between $200 and $300. Demetrios Theodosopoulos, 17, of 322 Newport Lane, and Jason Clark, 17, of 986 Doral Drive, were each charged with one felony count of burglary. A juvenile was also taken into custody and petitioned to juvenile court on the same charge. Theodosopoulos and Clark were released on $5,000 bond with a Sept. 14 court date. The juvenile was released into the custody of a parent.
