50-Family Garage Sale has something for everyone

For less money then a designer pair of jeans, a girl can buy her wedding dress -- she just has to wander down a long high school hallway to do it.

Buffalo Grove High School's Expressions Show Choir is hosting the second day of its annual 50-Family Garage Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the school at 1100 W. Dundee Road.

There will be a car wash, bake sale and tables of typical garage sale items such as clothes and furniture.

Encased in plastic, there will also be 70 wedding dresses -- something not found at most garage sales.

The gowns normally cost up to $5,000. However, at the garage sale today, they'll cost from $50 to $250. Most of the dresses are a size 10.

"They are beautiful," said Expressions mom Kathy Baird. "I mean, some are a little dusty or have a broken zipper, but these are really the same dresses you'll find at a bridal store."

In fact, that's exactly where the dresses were before this weekend.

Baird's daughter, Katie, has a friend who works at a bridal store in Wheeling. The store needed room for tuxedos and donated the dresses to the Expressions group, Baird said.

A choir room was transformed into a bridal shop on Friday, complete with full-length mirrors and changing areas.

The word must not have gotten out to those needing wedding dresses. The sale started on Friday, but only one veil was sold.

Expression members wore a few of the dresses and waved signs advertising the sale at Dundee and Arlington Heights Road on Friday, but not one dress was sold.

The group, which typically raises up to $5,000 from the sale, hopes to do better today.

"Even if someone uses them for costumes in a play, they are a great deal," Baird said.
