Letters to the Editor - Lake County

Thanks to all for making Relay work

The 2007 Gurnee/Wadsworth Relay For Life was July 14-15, and was a great success in raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. It also brought the community together to celebrate and honor cancer survivors and to pay tribute to those who have died from this disease.

This was Relay's fifth year in Gurnee, and every year it keeps getting better and better! In order for Relay to happen, it takes not just one person, but a community. The following community members have given of themselves, volunteering their time and efforts as Relay committee members some time in the last five years.

Present to past Co-chairs: Harry Critz, Alex Reese, Betsy Barnich, Amanda Harmer, Melody Stried, Melissa Carlille, Missy Pos, Jessica Critz and Christina Klein.

Committee members: Carole Wright, Terri Hilgendorf, Diane Bliese, Jeff & Angela Tatgenthorst, Bernadette Novak, Sue Sullivan, Stacey Elliott, Frank Fitzgerald, Carlene Griffin, Carol Senter, Jayne Bacino, Lina Brandonisio, Mandy Pederson, Barb Crowley, Betty Fallos, Donna Ferris, Nancy Gordon, Debbie Hoselton, Ilene Kile, Deb Krueger, Kathleen Crews, Ruth Nudelman, Sue Niemi, Odie Pahl, Michelle Robinson, Joyce Swanson, Jeanette White, Jeanne Browning, Shelley Goodwin, Diane Hernandez, Terry Huber, Samantha May, Cristin & Jeff Newton, Lisa Noel, Becky Ratfelders, Karen Shinners, Larry Stried, Terri Tomasiewicz, Tori Bloom, Peggy Welch, Denise Groesbeck, Leigh Miller, Leslie Cassidy, Linda Barnich, Patti Volpert, Roz Beitzel Barbara Dahm, Kerry Lavris, Tammy Hennessy, Noreen Reese, and Karen Richards.

And a few people that have volunteered every year the day of the event: Barry Henby, Cindy Munda, Betsy Moreno, and Charlie and Oscar from Warren High School!

I have had the great fortune to work with all of these wonderful, dedicated individuals. Thank you for all that you have done to help find a cure! Remember, "It's about being a community that takes up the fight."

Aquatic Center was work of hundreds

On behalf of myself and the entire village of Hawthorn Woods Board of Trustees, we would like to express our sincere and deepest appreciation to the residents of our village and the entire surrounding community for their patience while the fulfillment of a long-time dream finally came to fruition just a few weeks ago: the Hawthorn Woods Aquatic Center.

Our gratitude and thanks extend to the residents, engineers, architects, planners, village committee members, construction workers, landscapers, plumbers, the state and county inspectors and health departments and to everyone who contributed to the countless hours of manpower behind the new cornerstone of family recreation in Hawthorn Woods.

A special recognition is reserved for Toll Brothers Inc. for their generous donation, and to Merv and Nancy Beck for allowing the village to purchase the land and build the aquatic center next door!

Though impossible to recognize each person by name, every member of the community has contributed to the success of this project ... whether on the job site or just having patience during the morning commute while traveling cautiously in front of the construction zone.

We would again just like to say thank you for your words of encouragement, useful insight, good humor and willingness to endure this construction process.

If you haven't yet had a chance to visit the Hawthorn Woods Aquatic Center located at 94 Midlothian Road, come on in, the water is nice!
