Botanic garden to feature award-winning Italian chef

Award-winning chef Art Smith will demonstrate some of his favorite recipes Sunday during the Barilla Italian Cooking Weekend at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.

The two-day event runs Saturday and Sunday and features cooking demonstrations, olive oil and vinegar tastings, as well as herb gardening tips and giveaways.

Attendees, for example, can take home a free Sweet Genovese basil seedling, a packet of Italian flat-leaf parsley seeds and a copy of the Kitchen Garden Newsletter, with helpful tips for growing and cooking seasonal produce.

During the drop-in family programs at the Regenstein arbor, kids can help grow a "rainbow garden" or take part in other activities and games.

Hourlong cooking demonstrations start at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. both days. Smith is scheduled to appear at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The event is free; parking is $15. The Chicago Botanic Garden is at 1000 Lake Cook Road. (847) 835-5440.
