Hampshire baby alive after falling into water

A Hampshire baby was alive and still being worked on Monday night after falling into an unknown body of water, said Kane County Coroner Chuck West.

The incident occurred in Hampshire at around 8:30 p.m., although West wasn't sure whether the baby fell into a bathtub, swimming pool or river. Officials later took the child, believed to be a girl, to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, he said.

The Hampshire Fire Protection said a drowning had occurred, but knew nothing beyond that.

"It's too early to give any information," said Captain Trevor Herman, who referred calls to the Kane County Sheriff's Department, which also had no information on the matter.
