Pick up a book bargain at Friend's summer sale

If you've got a summer vacation still to take and you'd like to bring along a good book, you're in luck. The Rolling Meadows library is offering used book bargains at its summer sale next week.

The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Rolling Meadows Library, offers a variety of books for adults and children including best sellers, novels, biographies and nonfiction. In addition, CDs, DVDs, and audio books will be for sale.

Early birds can get the best picks at the presale from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. But top selections come at an extra price: It's $5 to get in. No entrance fees are charged for the regular sale the following three days, however.

Times are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 27, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 28, and 1 to 4 p.m. July 29. The sale is in the library's Community Room on the second floor of the building at 3110 Martin Lane.

And while you're there ... Check out the library's current art display just outside the sale room. Artist Pamela Lowrie of Wheaton is showing her works, which feature acrylic and colored pencil on canvas. The pieces are striking and include a touch of whimsy. Lowrie's display runs through September. All the paintings are for sale; call the Northwest Cultural Council at (847) 956-7966.

Watch your speed: The state transportation department has lowered the speed limit along Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows. The signs between Route 53 and Golf Road now say 35 mph, a tad slower than the previous 40 mph.

Last year, the city took a look at traffic accidents -- including a pedestrian fatality -- that have occurred along the road and determined a lower speed limit could help, said Deputy Police Chief Dave Scanlan.

The state agreed and made the change.

Police are writing only warnings to speeders now, Scanlan said, but that won't last forever ...

Border patrol: I've lived in Rolling Meadows nearly 15 years, but just recently I learned where the city's eastern border with Arlington Heights is. It's not simply Wilke Road/New Wilke Road. From Central Road to Algonquin, the border jogs over to Weber Drive. That means Penang, the new Malaysian restaurant I recently wrote about, really belongs to our neighbor to the east, not Rolling Meadows. An anonymous phone caller straightened me out with that information.
