Donate to Larkin Center yard sale
Shop for bargains during The Larkin Center's sixth annual Community Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and July 27 at the center, 1212 Larkin Ave. in Elgin. Through Tuesday morning, donated items are welcome on the front porch of the agency's Larkin Avenue building. The agency is seeking small household items, kitchenware, furniture, sporting goods, bikes and knickknacks. Yard sale proceeds will provide recreational activities for teens and adults enrolled in Larkin's transitional program for the mentally ill. For more information, call Guy Larson at (847) 608-2686.
See 'Wizard of Oz' at Festival Park
As part of its summer movie series, the city of Elgin and the Cultural Arts Commission will show "The Wizard of Oz" at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Festival Park, off Grove Avenue in Elgin. A program of classic cartoons will be shown beginning at 8 p.m. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. For details, call Gil Feliciano at (847) 931-6019. In case of rain, a notice will be posted.
Elgin library hosts 'Muggle Madness'
Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin will offer "Muggle Madness 'til Midnight" from 10 p.m. today to 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Book sales at 12:01 p.m. No registration is required. Celebrate the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" with a scavenger hunt and other activities, including a prize drawing for a copy of the book. Think you know all there is to know about Hogwarts, Veritaserum and Draco's wand? Kids and adults of all ages are invited to form teams of two, three or four members to compete in the Muggle Madness Trivia Contest. Registration for the contest is required. At 12:01 a.m. Saturday, books will go on sale in the library's concession area with a 40 percent discount, courtesy of Barnes and Noble. Fill out a pre-order form at the youth help desk in order to ensure a copy is available for you. Only cash and credit/debit will be accepted.

Democrats to hold ice cream social
The Elgin Township Democrats will hold a "Good Ole Summertime" ice cream social from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the home of Janice and David Bennett, 335 S. Commonwealth in Elgin. Admission is $5 per person. Families and friends are welcome. For details, visit www.elgindems.org.
