Just three days after it opened, the Palatine Cares Memorial Fund for the families of the victims of the Brown's Chicken & Pasta restaurant murders has garnered $13,500 in contributions and donations are still coming in.

Suburban National Bank of Palatine and village officials have been amazed and gratified by the display of sympathy and charity, said bank Vice President Robert Knapstem. The fund has swelled with between 250 and 300 contributions from throughout the state.

"Obviously the fund is extremely grateful for the care and concern that has been shown," Knapstem said. "What I'm amazed at and everyone has heard it before, is how generous people are in times of need. From that standpoint it has been a tremendously uplifting experience."

Those interested in contributing to the fund, which will be used for funeral expenses and the general benefit of the families of the seven victims, can send donations to the Suburban National Bank of Palatine, 30 N. Brockway St. or call 359-1070.
