Palatine students collect $3,000 for slain schoolmates' families

Originally published Jan. 14, 1993

About $3,000 has been collected by a group of students at Palatine High School who are working to raise money for the families of schoolmates Michael Castro and Rico Solis.

Donations, which are being taken in exchange for small, bowed blue ribbons, continued to come in Wednesday, even though many students left to attend funeral services for Castro, 16. Solis, 17, and Castro were killed in the shootings at Brown's Chicken & Pasta.

"Things were a little slower today, mostly because so many of the students were gone to the services," said Terry Bill, a school secretary. "They collected about $200. But it will probably pick up again tomorrow."

The money will be deposited in a fund at the Bank of Palatine.

A fund for Richard and Lynn Ehlenfeldt, the restaurant owners killed in the tragedy, has been set up at Glueckerl Funeral Home in Arlington Heights. A fund for the couple's children has been set up at NBD Bank in Arlington Heights.
