Pamphlet addresses work violence

Originally published Jan. 12, 1993

Workplace violence is often reported to police but it is not something tracked by state or federal authorities, according to Joseph Kinney, director of the National Safe Workplace Institute in Chicago.

His agency has a pamphlet for teenagers and parents, "Knowledge Is Power," available to those who send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to 54 W. Hubbard St., Suite 403, Chicago 60610.

"There've been some studies to suggest, through death certificates, that homicides are the third leading cause of work-related deaths, behind construction and transportation," Kinney said, adding that there were an estimated 140 deaths by children on the job.

Kinney added that the bloodshed of children on the job may be more likely in the suburbs than in Chicago since suburban teens are more likely to take fast food and other minimum wage jobs.
