  • Overcharged taxpayers speak out at Bartlett meeting Sep 11, 2014 4:52 AM
    Property taxpayers in northwest DuPage County who have been overcharged aired their frustration Wednesday night before state and local officials in Bartlett. State law requires the adjustments to be made the following tax cycle. “That just really doesn't seem fair to me,” said Paul Bertolini, of Bartlett. “… I don't trust government to give me what I'm due.”

  • Westminster, Harvest seeking postseason success Feb 8, 2014 9:40 PM
    The three smallest schools in Elgin will embark on the girls basketball postseason when Class 1A and Class 2A regionals open on Monday night. Westminster Christian, which advanced to a Class 1A supersectional last year before losing to eventual state champion Freeport Aquin, will play in Class 2A this season,, while Harvest Christian and Elgin Academy remain in Class 1A.

     
  • Another regional crown for Glenbard North Feb 8, 2014 7:55 PM
    Glenbard North's Jon Marmolejo and Larkin's Duke Bogicevic entered the 126-pound championship match of the Class 3A South Elgin wrestling regional Saturday with a combined 81-2 record. The match wasn't much of a contest. Marmolejo dominated Bogicevic and won by fall 43 seconds into the third period. Marmolejo was leading 14-1 at the time. “My goal was to pin him, obviously,” said Marmolejo, a senior. “I knew he was going to come out strong. I just had to wear him out eventually. The pin came along.” Marmolejo's title was one of eight individual championships for the Panthers, who had wrestlers in 12 of the 14 title matches. Glenbard North won the team title with 263.5 points, easily distancing itself from St. Charles East (182). Geneva (117) was third followed by South Elgin (103.5) and Bartlett (79.50). The regional title is the 24th in program history for the Panthers.

    The Westminster Christian boys basketball team claimed the Northeastern Athletic Conference tournament championship Saturday, defeating Mooseheart 68-26 in the semifinals and then Luther North 46-33 in the title game of the tournament, which was played at Westminster

     
  • Huntley clinches FVC Valley title outright Feb 8, 2014 11:00 PM
    The Huntley girls basketball team clinched the outright championship of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division Saturday with a 69-34 win over Jacobs in Algonquin. The title is Huntley’s first in girls basketball in the FVC. The Red Raiders last won a conference crown in 2002-03, their last year of competition in the Big Northern Conference.

    With the snow falling and the temperature falling even more outside the gym at St. Edward, it felt like the middle of the boys basketball season rather than nearing the end. But with five games left in the regular season, the Green Wave are trying to turn around a recent trend of losing, starting with a win at home on Saturday night against Suburban Catholic Conference foe Chicago Christian, beating the Knights 58-49 in a game that was much closer at the end than the Green Wave would have liked.

    It was a record-breaking day for the Dundee-Crown girls bowling team Saturday. The Chargers not only won their first postseason title in program history, but also set a new program record for highest 6-game series after placing first at the Buffalo Grove regional at Arlington Lanes in Arlington Heights.

  • West Chicago avenges loss to South Elgin Feb 8, 2014 12:03 AM
    It is one thing to say threes were absolutely wild for West Chicago in its 90-63 Upstate Eight Valley clinic of South Elgin Friday night. It’s another thing if you want to revise a TV show lyric and say “where the threes are theirs and theirs and Bibbs, Three’s Company, too.” It was more than a company of threes for the Wildcats, as John Konchar notched his first career triple-double of 24 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, the Wildcats were 11 of 22 from 3-point range and West Chicago (13-9, 5-6) scored 30 points in the third quarter rout where they shot 10 of 16.

     
  • Boys basketball/Fox Valley roundup Feb 7, 2014 11:45 PM
    Westminster Christian 48, IMSA 37: The Warriors (12-10) defeated IMSA during first round action of the NAC Tournament. Robert Kleczynski led Westminster with 13 points, while Brad Barker scored 12 points. “Great job defensively. This is a pretty good win for us,” said Westminster Christian Coach Bruce Firchau. Burlington Central 58, Genoa-Kingston 49: The Rockets (16-6, 6-2) beat the Cogs during Big Northern East competition Friday. Sean Fitzgerald led all scorers with 19 points, including 5 3-pointers. Reed Hunnicutt finished with 11 points and James Raney scored 10 for the Rockets. Cary-Grove 47, Prairie Ridge 38: Jason Gregoire’s 25 points helped the Trojans (12-9, 5-3) defeat Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action. Tyler Szydlo also did well for Cary-Grove, scoring 13 points. Christian Life 65, Harvest Christian 62: Despite John Vislisel’s 30 points, the Lions (9-11) lost in the first round of the NAC Tournament. Noah Fox scored 19 points for the Lions.

     
  • Girls basketball/Fox Valley roundup Feb 7, 2014 11:40 PM
    St. Edward 49, Guerin 33: The Green Wave (15-8) defeated Suburban Christian opponent Guerin during crossover action Friday. Cece Rapp led all scorers with 17 points, while Madelyn Spagnola finished with 11 points and Katie Swanson added 8 points. “Defense was real good and we were pleased with the way we were able to pressure Guerin,” said St. Edward Coach Michelle Dawson. Bartlett 49, Metea Valley 36: Bartlett beat Upstate Eight opponent Metea Valley during Valley Division competition. Ally Giampapa finished with 16 points for the Hawks. Kaitlin Brohan contributed 7 points, 5 steals, and 3 assists for Bartlett, while Lauren Janczak (8 points) and Elizabeth Arco (7) also played well. Burlington Central 71, North Boone 39: Samantha Pryor led the Rockets (19-4, 10-0) with 27 points, as Burlington Central clinched at least a tie for its second straight Big Northern East title. Shelby Holt had 11 points, while Alison Colby and Kayla Ross scored 9 points apiece for BC. Francis Parker 46, Elgin Academy 43: Susie Cain had a career-high 20 points as well as 11 rebounds and 3 steals as the Hilltoppers (4-14) fell just short in the Independent School League. Liz Huerta had a season-high 8 points for Elgin Academy.

  • South Elgin, Streamwood on collision course again Feb 7, 2014 8:36 PM
    If seeds hold, Fox Valley area girls basketball fans could be in for a treat come regional final Thursday in Class 3A and Class 4A. The IHSA released pairings for the postseason on Friday and in Class 4A, South Elgin and Streamwood could meet for the third straight year in a regional final, this time at Jacobs. The Sabres beat South Elgin last year before advancing to the sectional finals and falling to Huntley. In 2012, South Elgin beat Streamwood in the regional final before losing to Cary-Grove in the sectional semifinals.

     
  • Jacobs, Dundee-Crown looking for postseason success Feb 6, 2014 7:39 PM
    This year’s IHSA girls’ bowling state series features a new twist. A regional level of competition has been added where the top 4 teams in each regional and the top 10 individuals not on qualifying teams advance to the sectional round. Regionals get underway Saturday morning. District 300 neighbors Jacobs and Dundee-Crown are two Fox Valley-area teams looking to carry over regular-season success into the new postseason format.

     
  • Larkin will honor St. John Friday night Feb 6, 2014 10:26 PM
    Elgin-area superfan Dave St. John will be recognized at halftime of Friday night’s boys basketball game between Larkin and Elgin for his unwavering support of the athletic programs of each high school. St. John, 77, has deep ties to both schools. He is a 1954 graduate of Elgin High, where he met his wife, Nila (Class of ‘56). The couple’s five sons later attended Larkin. Three played sports. St. John soon became a fixture at Larkin sporting events. He even worked the chains for Royals home football games for 10 years. “That’s when I got hooked,” he said.

     
  • S. Elgin, Huntley, Burlington C. draw top seeds Feb 6, 2014 9:09 PM
    There were few surprises Thursday when the IHSA released the seeds for the upcoming Class 3A and Class 4A girls basketball postseason. In Class 4A, all Fox Valley area teams feed into the Judson University supersectional, which will be hosted by Westminster Christian. Sectional winners from Addison Trail and Crystal Lake South will meet in that Elite Eight game.

    Elgin Area School District U-46 officials are considering starting the school year a week earlier, on Aug. 13, next school year and beyond. They are is seeking public input on the proposed calendars for 2014-15 and 2015-16.

    Every July, thousands of Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pensioners find a little something extra in their mailboxes in addition to their monthly pension check. In 2013, those little somethings added up to a big bill for taxpayers — $41,054,552. It’s called the “13th Payment,” and it’s essentially a bonus paid to retirees for simply living another year and outliving other retirees.

     
  • Charter group wants to open kindergarten to 8th-grade school Feb 5, 2014 3:18 PM
    The Elgin Math and Science Charter School Initiative will conduct a community forum Tuesday at Gail Borden Public Library to answer questions about the group’s charter school proposal. “It’s going to be a presentation with more specifics about the school,” said Karen Schock, a retired U-46 teacher and president of the charter school initiative. “We want to really answer the questions people still have about the charter school.”
