Three new elementary schools, three new middle schools and one new high school in Elgin Area School District U-46 are hoping for Title I schoolwide funds for next year, which would give them greater flexibility in addressing the needs of students in poverty. The school board approved the plans for each school Monday night.

Taking a look back, and ahead, at Fox Valley softball May 30, 2013 12:00 AM
I had a softball player on one of my summer teams for a few years — Lauren Ott was her name — and every time something out of the ordinary would happen in a game she'd say, "That's weird." Which was exactly my thought when the last out was made at the sectional semifinal between Glenbard North and South Elgin in St. Charles Wednesday. That Storm loss brought to a close the 2013 softball season for the 14 schools we cover from the Fox Valley bureau and, well, as Lauren always put it, that's weird. It's the first time since 2006 our little corner of the world didn't have a team advance to at least the sectional final round of the state tournament series.

Principals will be central to U-46 restructuring process May 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Principals are central to their schools’ success, research shows. Elgin Area School District U-46 is following that model as it transforms 10 elementary schools deemed failing under federal guidelines. Seven principals will stick with their schools next year as the changes take hold while three new principals have been asked to turn around the struggling schools.

Fate of charter appeal uncertainMay 29, 2013 12:00 AM
When Governor Pat Quinn signed a one-year moratorium on the establishment of new virtual charter schools into law, suburban administrators expected an end to the appeal process currently under way for one such school. But that may not be the case. Attorneys on one side argue the commission has a legal responsibility to complete the appeal while those on the other side say the commission no longer has authority to approve the virtual charter school. A decision is expected this week.

Cherry, Benz lead Glenbard North past S. Elgin May 29, 2013 12:00 AM
The most talked about number prior to Wednesday's Class 4A St. Charles East sectional softball game between Glenbard North and South Elgin was 10. No, it wasn't the prediction on how many strikeouts Glenbard North senior Lindsey Cherry would have, although one who guessed that number would end up correct. It was more about the 10 runs the Panthers allowed in their two regional games — 4 to Wheaton North and 6 to Schaumburg in Saturday's championship game. Well, Cherry made sure that wasn't going to happen. And Sydney Benz did it again. What it all added up to was a 6-1 Glenbard North win and a second straight trip to the sectional finals for the Panthers, who fell 1-0 to Bartlett at Lake Park last year.

Say Watt? South Elgin upends St. Charles N. May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Victoria Watt picked an excellent time to experience a couple of personal firsts for her South Elgin softball team. The senior second baseman opened the Class 4A St. Charles North regional championship game against the host North Stars on Saturday morning with her first home run of the season. In the sixth inning, she slid home safely for the first time as part of a suicide squeeze bunt that lifted the No. 2 seed Storm to its first regional title in four years with a 2-1 victory over top-seeded St. Charles North. South Elgin (19-14) will play Glenbard North Wednesday in the St. Charles East sectional semifinals. The Panthers beat Schaumburg 8-6 Saturday to win the Schaumburg regional.

Nutof, South Elgin shut down Glenbard N. May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
South Elgin baseball victories tend to follow a formula: close games characterized by excellent starting pitching and just enough run support. The Storm adhered to that formula Friday in a 2-0 upset of No. 5 Glenbard North (19-12) in a Class 4A Wheaton North regional semifinal. No. 11 South Elgin (18-14) scored 2 first-inning runs and junior right-hander Ryan Nutof shut out the Panthers on 5 hits.

C-G’s Hurley sticks with it, makes shot and discus finals May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The pressure was off, as far as Cary-Grove sophomore Ricky Hurley was concerned. On his second throw during the shot put competition at the Class 3A session of the boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Hurley launched the shot a personal-best 55-3.25 to secure a spot in Saturday's finals. His effort was the fifth-best toss of the preliminary round. He also advanced to Saturday's discus finals.

Jacobs’ Panchapakesa still alive at state May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
After battling all season long to impose themselves as serious contenders in the area, Fox Valley Conference power and sectional champ Jacobs has just one remaining player alive at the 98th Illinois State Tennis Championships in Arlington Heights. Freshmen Kailash Panchapakesa (33-6), who finished third at sectionals behind Andre Norasith (South Elgin) and Hampshire junior Elisha Hougland, finds himself in the consolation bracket against Austin Russell (Plainfield South) after going 2-1 on the day at the Hoffman Estates venue Thursday.

Rodriguez wins it for South Elgin May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
South Elgin senior Kara Rodriguez did not have much success in her first two at-bats against Elgin junior standout Jennah Perryman Thursday, striking out both times. But with the game on the line, South Elgin's Female Athlete of the Year showed the determination of a champion and won the game for her team. Rodriguez lined a clean single up the middle to score Paige Allen from third base with the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Storm beat the Maroons 4-3 in the semifinals of the Class 4A St. Charles North regional. South Elgin beat St. Charles North 4-1 early in the season.

Westminster falls in Class 1A sectional May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
It wasn't exactly the way Westminster Christian's softball team hopes its first trip to a sectional semifinal would go, but the Warriors were there nonetheless. Westminster managed just 4 hits and committed 6 errors Wednesday in a 20-2 loss to Gardner South Wilmington in the semifinals of the Class 1A Gilman Iroquois West sectional, played in downstate Onarga.
