  • Marmion mixes it up in win over St. Francis Jan 22, 2015 9:57 PM
As the competitive portion of boys swim seasons wind down, everyone in the water has a variety of tasks yet to accomplish. For Marmion, Thursday’s dual meet with St. Francis marked a final home meet and a chance for swimmers to compete in some events they don’t often swim. Most of the Cadets seniors are attending a retreat, which opened some varsity lineup spots. Marmion still swept every event in the meet and claimed a 100-60 victory.

  • Wheaton North scores in waves Jan 10, 2015 12:46 AM
Wheaton North’s boys basketball team can score in so many different ways. The Falcons showed every single one of them to St. Francis. The offense took center stage in an overall brilliant night for Wheaton North, which rolled to Friday’s 70-43 nonconference road win over the Spartans.

Watson and other members of the 2014-15 Daily Herald Leadership Team all found ways to make a difference in their communities. We’d like you to meet the members of the DuPage team — winners and honorable mentions.

  • Energized Antioch gets past St. Francis Dec 29, 2014 10:41 PM
Junior forward Kelly Johnson and her Antioch girls basketball teammates greeted St. Francis with plenty of energy for the semifinals of Lisle’s Holiday Cage Classic on Monday. The Sequoits remembered losing last year’s semifinal to St. Edward by 1 point. “It’s so much more frustrating to lose a game by 1 or 2 points because you look (back) early on in the game if we would have done these things, we could have won the game,” Johnson said. This time, the problem was too much enthusiasm. Once the Sequoits toned their full-court attack down just a notch, the result was an 18-point run that paved the way for a 49-36 victory. Antioch (13-2), riding a 10-game winning streak, will try to win the 16-team tournament for the first time since 2010 when it faces Hampshire at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

  • Sullivan, St. Francis keep focus forward Dec 22, 2014 8:19 PM
St. Francis Jason Sullivan has a short basketball memory, by design. He didn’t care that last year Northridge Prep handled the Spartans at the Glenbard West Holiday Classic. “We don’t really like to look at the past,” said the senior guard, “we look at the future and what our next school ahead of us is, so our mentality was the next game, attack it.”

  • Aurora Christian runs by St. Francis in 2nd half Dec 12, 2014 11:49 PM
St. Francis and Aurora Christian’s boys basketball teams are a study in contrasting styles. Using speed limit parlance, St. Francis likes slow and steady city driving. Aurora Christian prefers life on the highway, revving the engine at 65 mph and up behind a fast-breaking offense. Most of the first half of Friday’s Suburban Christian Conference opener was played at St. Francis’ more methodical pace, as the Spartans ground out a 19-14 lead. But the Eagles pushed the proverbial pedal to the metal from there. The hosts sped up the tempo, powering past St. Francis to turn a 31-23 third quarter deficit into a 56-42 advantage before hanging on 62-56 for their fourth straight victory.

On Tuesday Gabe Johnson scored a career-high 24 points to pace St. Francis’ 61-41 win over Luke’s alma mater. No longer conference opponents, they remain rivals.

  • For St. Francis’ Bobowski, name of the game was winning Dec 4, 2014 1:45 PM

  • Peez lifts Batavia with pressure free throws Nov 28, 2014 11:51 PM
Sitting on the bench following a St. Francis timeout, Batavia’s Chasen Peez had one thing on his mind — well, actually two. “Make these free throws, make these free throws, make these free throws,” said Peez. The 6-foot-7 senior center did just that, sinking both foul shots with 14.5 seconds remaining to give his team a 56-55 lead. When the Spartans’ Jason Sullivan misfired on a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Bulldogs (3-0) erupted in celebration after their 1-point victory in Friday’s fourth day of the 39th annual Ken Peddy Windmill City Classic in Batavia.
