On a windy day offensive linemen Quinn Calcagno, Spencer Stibbe, Cole Cunningham, Michael Riley, John Vargyas and Kevin Killian run-blocked for the bulk of St. Francis’ offense and all three touchdowns in a 21-14 win Saturday over Fenwick, played at Morton West in Berwyn.

    It takes a lot to impress Peg Kopec, and her St. Francis volleyball program did just that Wednesday night in Aurora. With a 25-15, 25-15 win over Rosary, the Spartans won their 30th game. And that’s not the impressive part, at least not the most impressive part.

    Waubonsie Valley senior quarterback Zach Bennema and Batavia senior defensive end Josh Leonhard have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their performances in Week 8 of the high school football season. Bennema was prolific both as a passer and ball-carrier in Waubonsie Valley’s 25-28 victory over Neuqua Valley, while Leonhard intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown along with providing great all-around play in the Bulldogs’ 26-20 decision over Geneva.

    A couple of inches is all it took to get Wheaton Academy refocused. Leading by a goal in the 58th minute of Tuesday’s Class 2A St. Francis boys soccer regional semifinal, the Warriors breathed a sigh of relief after Spartans senior Jose Zepeda saw his toe-poke attempt to tie the game roll inches wide left of the Warriors’ net.

    Russell Matos and Michael Wittenberg ended their Glenbard South boys golf season in style on Saturday in Normal. The Raiders duo combined for 7 birdies during final-day action of the Class 2A boys finals at the Weibring Golf Club to lead Glenbard South to its first golf trophy in program history.

    The St. Francis Spartans defense dominated the De La Salle Meteors for a 33-14 win in Chicago Catholic (Green) Conference action on Friday in Chicago. Defensive back Matthew Hanson had 2 interceptions for touchdowns and Will Purdom had 42 yards on 11 carries to lead the Spartans.

  • Controversy, but Grayslake C. sectional finally finishes Oct 14, 2014 11:18 PM
    The marathon two-day Class 2A Grayslake Central boys golf sectional finally came to a conclusion Tuesday but not until an eight-player playoff took place to decide the 10th and final individual qualifying spot, and not until nearly 90 minutes of rules committee meetings and a call to the IHSA had to be made to decide the final team qualifying spot. When all was said and done, the 317 shot by St. Francis prior to Monday’s weather suspension held up, sending coach Greg Baresel and the Spartans home with their first sectional championship since 1994. Richmond-Burton’s 324 from Monday held at second place and the third and final qualifying team was Vernon Hills, which finished its round Tuesday and carded a 327, one shot better than Burlington Central.

    Jacobs senior running back Josh Walker and Batavia junior cornerback Brett Bowman have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their football performances in Week 5. Walker finished with 5 touchdowns in win against Dundee-Crown, while Bowman intercepted 3 passes in Batavia’s victory over St. Charles North.

    St. Francis won the battle of the Spartans, defeating Hales Franciscan 29-0 in a Chicago Catholic League crossover football game on Saturday night in Chicago. William Purdom ran for 154 yards on 26 carries and 2 touchdowns for St. Francis.

     
  • Energized Wheaton Academy eager for homecoming Sep 24, 2014 3:52 PM
    It’ll be a memorable homecoming weekend at Wheaton Academy. The Warriors are 4-0 heading into Saturday’s football game against Riverside-Brookfield at Performance Trust Field in West Chicago. It’s the program’s West Division debut in the Metro Suburban Conference.
