    With piano players of all age and skill levels performing a diverse catalog of songs that included Lady Gaga, Beethoven, Woody Guthrie there was something for everyone at the American Grands XIX concerts Saturday in Elgin. Organizers arranged the program by ability, which meant there were some interesting combinations onstage. “You literally might have a 6-year-old sitting next to somebody who’s 76 and for me, that’s one of the joys of the program,” said Colin Holman, the American Grands conductor.

Ryan Valesh and Isaiah Vela inspired five consecutive championships beginning at 132 pounds, and along with Anthony Rubino’s crown at 113 to start things off, the Saints won all six of their finals to lift the Upstate Eight Conference trophy for a second straight year.

The announcement concludes a national search conducted over the past five months led by Daniel E. Lloyd, COD’s dean of liberal arts.

Both teams shot under 40 percent and combined to hit just 2 of the 26 3-pointers they took. With the Upstate Eight Valley Division up in the air, a win for either team would help them gain footing for a shot at the title. Unfortunately for the host Hawks, the ball did not bounce in their favor, falling to Waubonsie Valley 39-29 Friday night.
